Community Prevention Education and Outreach

The Community Prevention Education and Outreach Program offers prevention education and training for youth, professionals and the general public about issues regarding sexual violence.
The public health approach, which looks at the negative impact sexual violence has on the overall health of individuals and communities, is our primary model. We also incorporate other models, in particular a social norms model. In this model, we encourage discussion about the messages surrounding sexual violence, gender roles and sexuality that program participants receive from the world around them, and how they process those messages.

The goals of Community Prevention Education and Outreach are:

Rape Prevention Education Program

The Center Against Sexual Assault Rape Prevention Education Program is a program funded through the Arizona Department of Health Services. The Rape Prevention Education Program has three components.

1. Youth Education: Youth ages 12-24 or youth in grades 6-12 receive sexual assault awareness training that is age appropriate. The training is presented through multi-model educational sessions, consisting of a minimum of an hour and a half presentation. Most presentations for youth are 3 to 5 hours long. The training contains a variety of instructional methods designed to reach all types of learners at developmentally appropriate levels. The program empowers students by providing accurate information and a chance to learn and practice personal safety skills. Education helps people recognize, avoid, stop or disclose abuse. Moreover, students who participate in personal safety programs are more likely to see the perpetrator as responsible for the abuse and less likely to engage in victim blaming.
Inclusion of parents/guardians: We require active consent from parents/guardians of minors participating in Rape Prevention and Education. Permission slips are provided by the Program in English and Spanish. We can also provide an informational session for parents/guardians before presenting the program for them to learn about the program and ask questions.

Age-appropriate, classroom-based lessons: Professionals who are experienced in training and childhood/adolescent development deliver the program. Our lessons include a variety of activities to best accommodate the learning styles and developmental levels of the many different students we teach.
Some of the topics included in Rape Prevention and Education for youth include:

  • Sexual assault awareness;
  • Legal definitions of sexual offenses;
  • Sexual harassment;
  • Healthy and unhealthy relationships;
  • Healthy attitudes towards victims of sexual violence; and
  • Training regarding community resources.

2. Training for Professionals: The Program provides minimum of one hour presentations to school staff, social service providers, and parents. Topics included in this session consist of,

  • Legal definitions of sexual offenses;
  • How to combat sexual harassment in schools;
  • Skills for handling disclosures of sexual violence;
  • Healthy attitudes towards victims of sexual violence;
  • Training on community resources; and
  • Mandatory reporting.

3. Training for the General Public: The program offers training for the adult population. We offer training in any community setting including treatment centers and residential facilities. Program participants learn about,
