Men’s Anti-Violence Partnership
of Southern Arizona

History
The Men's Anti-Violence Partnership (MAP) of Southern Arizona
is modeled after a highly successful Phoenix project, the Men's Anti-Violence Network (MAN), founded in 2001.

The Men's Anti-Violence Partnership of Southern Arizona mission is to end men's violence against women and girls with an emphasis on sexual and domestic violence, which are epidemic in our community. The emphasis will be on prevention and leadership development. The Men's Anti-Violence Partnership of Southern Arizona is a project of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault and supports the Center's mission of reducing the incidence and trauma of sexual violence.

MAP of Southern Arizona Goals
Public Awareness:
MAP will sponsor an annual project to increase public awareness of sexual violence and domestic violence. Through contacts in the media and athletics, MAP will develop and produce an annual media campaign around an issue (such as dating violence, alcohol and rape, bullying, etc.). U of A Basketball Head Coach Lute Olson and U of A Football Coach Mike Stoops have volunteered to participate in the public awareness project. The Center received permission from the Oakland-based Family Violence Prevention Fund to use their public service announcement, "Coaching Boys to Men", to promote an anti-violence message for fathers and sons: All Violence Against Women is Wrong. Please watch and listen for it on the following stations: KFNN-AM- The Fan • KNST-AM • KLPX FM • KFMA-FM • KMSB-TV (Fox) • KTUU-TV (My TV) • KOLD- (CBS) • KGUN 9 (ABC) • Cox Cable.

MAP will hold an annual dinner. This dinner will be a chance to showcase successful prevention efforts, to raise funds and awareness and to recognize through an awards program, men and women in our community who have made significant contributions to reducing violence against women and girls in our community. The Second Annual MAP Gala will be held Sunday, November 18, 2007 at The Westin La Paloma. The event will feature honorary co-host and keynote speaker, Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS and the 17th Surgeon General of the United States.
.

Community Education: MAP will contribute in a significant way to reducing violence against women and girls in our community by working to increase our already highly successful prevention education programs in middle school through university, those in youth detention, and by working with coaches, educators and community centers across those age populations to develop leadership and positive role models for boys and young men. MAP will draw upon best practices from programs, both state-wide and nationally, and adapt these resources for our unique community.

Advocacy: MAP will use its significant sphere of influence to contact and educate elected officials around issues and public funding (e.g. Violence Against Women Act, Victims of Crime Act) to aid in reducing the incidence and trauma of violence against women.

Fundraising: MAP fundraising efforts will contribute towards providing the resources needed for prevention programs and survivor services. Members of MAP will contribute and help raise funds for general operations and prevention programs of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault and the Men's Anti-Violence Partnership of Southern Arizona. Founding Members will help recruit additional Founding Members and general members, as well as helping with an annual fundraising/community education event.
